Key features

The industrial site on which Plasta Rei was recently established was originally set up for the production of chemicals and remained operational until a few years ago. This configuration makes it possible to combine a rapid start-up, limited capital investment and the industrial scalability of the project.

Today, it has obtained authorisation in line with the industrial conversion project, aimed at processing up to 60,000 tonnes of plastic waste per year. The first production line, currently under construction, may be supplemented by an expansion project to utilise the authorised capacity to full capacity.

History

1950s

In the early 1950s, the Cisterna di Latina plant began operations.

2021

In 2021, the plant was acquired to prevent its planned closure and decommissioning. Plasta Rei was established.

2022–2023

  • Between 2022 and 2024, Plasta Rei developed and refined, at pilot scale, the core technology of its proprietary post-consumer PET recycling process based on depolymerisation.
  • In 2023, Plasta Rei secured funding under Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP).
  • In the same year, the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology certified that the process developed by Plasta Rei successfully passed the challenge tests conducted on the treated feedstock (contamination testing).

2024

  • Plasta Rei demonstrated that the granules produced by the pilot plant successfully passed the relevant leaching tests.
  • Itelyum acquired an equity stake in the company.
  • Plasta Rei began the conversion of the site for the development of its first industrial-scale production line.

2025

  • In February, Plasta Rei used its pilot plant to produce granules meeting target market specifications in terms of intrinsic viscosity and colour.
  • In April, Plasta Rei successfully completed injection blow moulding tests, confirming the material’s excellent processability.
  • In December, Itelyum acquired 100% of Plasta Rei’s share capital.
