Research and Development

Intellectual property

Thanks to its core Research & Development activities, Plasta Rei has developed and validated a unique technology for the recycling of post-consumer polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics.

PET is one of the most commonly used plastics, identified by the symbol ‘1’ under the Voluntary Plastic Container Coding System proposed by the Society of the Plastics Industry in 1988. It is used particularly in the beverage bottle sector and in the production of fibres.

The proprietary chemical recycling process for PET, described in the previous sections, has undergone a comprehensive industrial validation programme.

From the laboratory to industrial-scale production

The technology developed by Plasta Rei has been validated through a comprehensive programme of research, experimentation and industrial scale-up.

The process has been tested: Tests carried out on the pilot line have demonstrated the robustness of the process and its ability to produce crPET of consistent quality, regardless of the composition of the input material.

  • in batch mode;
  • in semi-continuous mode;
  • using different types of feedstock, including those with high levels of contamination and variability.

This validation process forms the technical basis for the construction and commissioning of the first industrial production line.

Beyond bottles

Ongoing research focuses on:

  • Recycling of unsorted PET, regardless of opacity, colour and contamination
  • Industrialisation of the recycling of multilayer plastics
  • Recycling of polyester fabrics
