Circular economy: Itelyum completes full acquisition of Plasta Rei, strengthening its position in chemical recycling of plastics

Itelyum has increased its shareholding in Plasta Rei to 100%, completing the acquisition of the remaining shares after initially entering the company with a significant stake. The transaction reaffirms Itelyum’s commitment to developing advanced solutions for plastic waste management and contributing to European sustainability and emission-reduction goals in a sector that, in Italy alone, uses 530,000 tonnes of PET for bottles every year.

The pilot plant operated by Plasta Rei in Cisterna di Latina has demonstrated the feasibility of producing secondary raw materials of a quality comparable to virgin PET—fully recyclable and without polymer degradation—from PET sourced both from separate collection and from other supply chains. In parallel, a short-loop recycling plant based on industrial-scale depolymerisation is being developed. This facility will enable the company to reach the production capacity needed to enter a market where demand for food-grade recycled PET is set to rise, supporting resource valorisation within the economic system as well as decarbonisation and the broader transition to a circular economy.

“The acquisition of Plasta Rei marks another tangible milestone for Itelyum in its strategy to convert waste into new resources for the economy and society,” said Marco Codognola, CEO of Itelyum. “Chemical recycling of PET complements our activities in regenerating waste oils, chemical waste and solvents, and treating industrial water—further increasing Itelyum’s contribution to Italy’s shift toward regenerable, high-value-added materials. With Plasta Rei’s pilot plant already operational and the industrial facility under development, we aim to play a major role in increasing the availability of recycled PET for Italian industry, for which we are already the preferred partner in sustainable waste management and recycling.”
